Both prepaid MasterCards and Visas are offered by AccountNow. There are more options for recharging the card accounts than most other cards and the feature set is also more extensive than that of competitors. Though prepaid cards don’t generally have an effect on building a credit history, there are a couple of features associated with these cards that can help build or improve a credit rating.. For those reasons, we’ve chosen AccountNow as the worthy recipient of our “TopTenREVIEWS Silver Award” for prepaid credit cards.
The fees charged by AccountNow are very typical of those charged across the board for prepaid credit cards, neither particularly high nor particularly low. Membership starts out with a $9.95 activation fee but it will be waived if the user opts to have recurring direct deposits go directly to the card. Those deposits can be in the form of a paycheck or government benefits including welfare, disability or social security. There is a $9.95 monthly service fee but with that fee there are no additional fees for purchases, whether signature or PIN transactions, so users are free to choose credit or debit at the check stand without any financial impact. Withdrawals can be made from domestic ATMs for $2.00 but withdrawals from a cashier are a rather steep $4.95. Withdrawals from international ATMs also cost $4.95 and AccountNow adds a 2.95% currency conversion fee for purchases made outside the U.S. Conducting a balance inquiry at an ATM costs $1.00.
Being a prepaid card, there is no monthly bill to pay. The monthly statement is available online but if you’d like to get a printed one from AccountNow, there’s a charge of $2.95. Replacing a lost or stolen card will incur a charge of $10.00.
