The RushCard prepaid Visa card will be a viable option for many people who are in search of a prepaid credit card. While most fees and features of this card don’t distinguish it from its competitors, it is the only prepaid card we could find that offers free customer service to all customers by telephone. We think that’s an important advantage and an example that other card issuers should follow.
Fees charged for the RushCard prepaid Visa are structured rather differently than most other cards featured on this review site which is precisely the reason that, in choosing the card that’s right for you, that the fees are compared to the way you’re actually likely to use the card. Right up front, RushCard charges a $19.95 activation fee, a move that we have difficulty understanding in that it’s about double that charged for other prepaid cards. That’s not to say, however, that the card is necessarily more expensive than other cards because several other fees are lower than most.
There is no monthly service fee for the RushCard. Making purchases, whether signature or PIN transactions, incur a fee of $1.00 each but those fees are capped at $10.00 per month. In short, that’s equivalent to a card with a typical $10.00 monthly fee but no transaction fees if you make ten or more purchases monthly. Of course, if you typically make fewer than ten purchases with the card in a month’s time, this makes for a lower than average monthly cost.
One of the best uses of prepaid credit cards, online bill paying, is more expensive with the RushCard than with most competitors. There is a onetime $2.00 enrollment fee then each transaction costs $1.00.
Other charges associated with the RushCard include $1.95 for ATM withdrawals and $ .50 for ATM balance inquiries. If the RushCard isn’t used in a 90-day period, a $1.95 inactivity fee is imposed. While we’re generally critical of inactivity fees, this one is lower than that charged by most cards which can range as high as $9.95. Though, like other prepaid cards, the RushCard is designed to be managed online, a paper statement can be purchased for just $1.00 which is more reasonable that the fee charged by competitors.
