TopTenREVIEWS - Gold Award - Awarded for excellence in design, useability and feature set
By Greg Boyles

A Student Credit Card is the best way for students to build credit and get rewards, and no card does it better than our “TopTenREVIEWS Gold Award” winner Citi mtvU Platinum Select Visa Card for College Students. For starters, Citi mtvU has a low APR, only 13.24 percent and a 6 month introductory period of 0 percent.

Citi mtvU offers the best rewards out of any Student Credit Card we reviewed. While you can earn points just for using your card anywhere, you get bonus points for using them at select locations such as restaurants, bookstores, record stores, movie theaters and video rental stores. So by using your card for things you were already going to pay for, such as text books, groceries, rent and entertainment, you’re racking up points which can be redeemed for cool stuff. They also offer up to 2,000 points just for having a good GPA, something we feel every student credit card should offer but doesn’t.

Citi mtvU’s Credit 101 program is a free online tool which uses tutorials, articles and a budget calculator to teach students how to use credit and manage money properly. This tool, if utilized, will help students keep their credit score up and spend within their means. This card will also notify the cardholder if they are coming close to exceeding their credit limit or if a payment is due, a feature which will prove useful to the constantly busy, hardly have time to eat lunch, student.

Along those lines, Citi mtvU also offers great customer support. Their 24/7 phone support, extensive FAQ section and email support ensure that you can find an answer to any question in a timely manner.

APR for Purchase:   Excellent

Citi mtvU’s Annual Percentage Rate for purchase is one of the better we encountered during the review process. While many cards have a 0 percent introduction rate and a 6 month intro period, Citi mtvU has a low 13.24 percent regular APR. You will also encounter no annual fees with Citi mtvU and a 20 day grace period.

Points for Card Use:   Excellent

Collect points and redeemed them for plane tickets, concert tickets, MP3 Player, CDs and more just for using a Citi mtvU Student Credit Card to buy the things you were already going to buy. Citi mtvU offers points on every purchase made with a card, no exceptions.

We feel that Citi mtvU has the best rewards system of any card we reviewed. For every dollar spent at a restaurant, bookstore, record store, movie theater and movie rental store you can earn 5 points. So the $400 you spent on text books last semester could have earned you 2,000 points. You can also earn 25 points every month just for paying your bills on time.

We also really liked that Citi mtvU rewards students for their good grades, a feature absent from any of the Student Credit Cards we reviewed. Students can turn in their transcript to Citibank and receive points for a good GPA. Points range from 250 to 2,000 and can be collected twice a year following the end of each semester.

It may seem like an impossible task to earn points for a cool toy such as an MP3 player, but when you break down what most students spend in a semester, it’s quite possible. After books, rent, groceries, tuition and entertainment, you’ll probably have earned upward of 6,000 points. Then let’s say you get good grades earning you 1,000 points. You’ve also paid your bills on time for four months, that’s 100 points. So through this hypothetical situation you’re looking at 7,100 points for the semester and you’ve only purchased things you already needed.

Note that you can only earn 75,000 points with a Citi mtvU card in a calendar year. But 75,000 points will get you one nice plane ticket.
